Diagnosed with scoliosis at age 11, Stacy Lewis spent more than six years wearing a hard plastic back brace for 18 hours a day, removing it only to play golf. When bracing failed to correct the curvature of her spine, she underwent major surgery to have a metal rod and five screws fused into her back. Facing the very real possibility that she might never play competitive golf again, Stacy committed herself to nine grueling months of rehabilitation.
Her determination paid off. She made the University of Arkansas golf team and, just two years later, captured the NCAA Individual Championship. That resilience became a hallmark of her professional career. After joining the LPGA Tour, Stacy claimed her first major championship in 2011. In 2012, she won four tournaments and became the first American in 18 years to earn the LPGA’s most prestigious honor, Player of the Year.
Her dominance continued. In April 2013, Stacy ascended to No. 1 in the Rolex World Rankings. That same season, she recorded three victories and secured the Vare Trophy for the tour’s lowest scoring average — becoming the first American in 19 years to win the award.
Over her career, Stacy amassed 13 LPGA victories, more than 100 top-10 finishes, four U.S. Solheim Cup appearances, and served as Team USA Solheim Cup Assistant Captain in 2021 and Captain in 2023 and 2024. She also represented Team USA at the 2016 Rio Olympics, finishing T4. When she retired at the end of the 2025 season, she had secured her place among the most accomplished players in LPGA history.
But statistics alone don’t define Stacy Lewis. What sets her apart is not simply what she achieved; it is what she overcame to achieve it. Her journey is more than a golf story. It is a medical miracle story. A perseverance story. A story of faith, resilience, leadership, motherhood, and giving back.
Stacy Lewis and her husband, Gerrod Chadwell, have two daughters.

Stacy Lewis’s journey to becoming one of the game’s most accomplished players began with a challenge few young athletes face. Diagnosed with scoliosis at age 11, she wore a back brace for more than seven years, including throughout high school, in hopes of avoiding surgery. When the curvature of her spine continued to progress, Lewis underwent major spinal surgery during her senior year of high school, requiring a rod and five screws to stabilize her back. The operation temporarily put golf aside and made her future in the game uncertain. Through months of rehabilitation and determination, she regained her strength and arrived at the University of Arkansas ready to pursue collegiate golf. What could have ended her competitive career instead became an early defining chapter in a life marked by perseverance, resilience and an extraordinary determination to succeed.
Stacy Lewis captured the Vare Trophy in both 2013 and 2014, awarded to the LPGA player with the season’s lowest scoring average. Winning it in consecutive years demonstrated the remarkable consistency of her game during one of the most dominant stretches of her career. The 2014 honor was particularly memorable, as Lewis became the first American since Betsy King in 1993 to sweep the LPGA’s three major season awards: Player of the Year, Vare Trophy and money title.
Stacy Lewis has long spoken through her actions about how much representing the United States means to her. Her Solheim Cup career spans four appearances as a player, followed by leadership roles as an assistant captain and ultimately as captain. She represented Team USA in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017, helping the Americans capture the Cup in 2015 and 2017. Even when a back injury forced her to withdraw as a player in 2019, Lewis remained with the team as an unofficial assistant captain. She returned as an official assistant in 2021 before being selected to captain the United States in both 2023 and 2024. That progression from player to leader reflects her deep commitment to team competition and the pride she takes in representing her country.
In 2025, Stacy Lewis received the LPGA Founders Award, one of the Tour’s most meaningful honors, voted on by her fellow LPGA members and recognizing the player who best represents the spirit, ideals, and values of the LPGA. For Lewis, the award carried special significance. She has long expressed her appreciation for the 13 women who founded the LPGA in 1950 and created opportunities that generations of players, including Lewis, have been able to pursue. After receiving the award, Lewis challenged today’s players to care for the Tour in a way its founders would be proud of. Her connection to that legacy is also personal, as she enjoyed getting to know LPGA Founder Marilynn Smith and gaining a deeper appreciation for the women whose vision, courage, and determination built the LPGA.

In September 2017, Stacy Lewis captured an emotional victory at the Cambia Portland Classic, ending a three-year winless streak on the LPGA Tour. Before the tournament, Lewis pledged to donate her entire winner’s check to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in her hometown of Houston. True to her word, she contributed her $195,000 first-place prize to help families and communities devastated by the storm. Her sponsor, KPMG, matched the donation, bringing the total contribution to $390,000. The victory was a powerful demonstration of Lewis’s compassion, generosity, and commitment to giving back to the community she calls home.
In 2011, Stacy Lewis captured her first major championship at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, now known as The Chevron Championship, at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. Following her victory, Lewis celebrated by taking the traditional champion’s leap into Poppie’s Pond alongside her family and caddie. After emerging from the water, she was presented with the iconic white champion’s robe, a cherished symbol of one of the most celebrated traditions in women’s golf.
As a kid battling scoliosis, Stacy Lewis wore a back brace for many years, carefully concealing it beneath her clothing so others would not notice. The brace became a constant part of her daily life, both physically and emotionally. To this day, she avoids using Velcro whenever possible, as its distinctive sound brings back memories of the brace she wore for so many years.
The Solheim Cup’s significance in American golf extends to the White House, where a Solheim Cup flag has flown on the South Lawn putting green. The flag symbolizes the pride, patriotism, and competitive spirit of the American women who have represented their country in this prestigious international competition. It recognizes the Solheim Cup’s place in the history of women’s golf.
In 2007, while still an amateur at the University of Arkansas, Stacy Lewis captured the LPGA’s NW Arkansas Championship in a rain-shortened, 18-hole event. Competing against the world’s best professionals, Lewis delivered a remarkable performance on her home course. Although the victory was unofficial due to the shortened tournament, it offered an early glimpse of the champion she would become.
