Golf Professional / Teacher

This Exhibit is Generously Sponsored by the Albert & Margaret Alkek Foundation.
Dick Harmon was one of America's top golf instructors with clients including Fred Couples, Jay Haas, Craig Stadler, Lanny Wadkins, Blaine McCallister, Steve Elkington and 2009 U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover. He was a native of New Rochelle, New York, but planted his roots in Houston, Texas, where he devoted his life to his family and love of golf as a teacher and mentor.
His father, Claude Harmon, won the 1948 Masters Tournament. His brothers, Butch, Craig, and Bill, were also ranked in Golf Digest's Top 50 Teachers.
Harmon was the professional at River Oaks Country Club in Houston between 1977 and 2001. During his tenure, he was twice named the Southern Texas PGA’s Teacher of the Year (1987 and 1988). After leaving that position, he established two teaching centers in Houston.
Harmon established the Dick Harmon School of Golf at the Houstonian with teaching assistant and friend Arthur J. Scarbrough. The school became a great success, especially within the junior golfing community in and around the Houston area and later throughout Texas. Harmon was said to be one of junior golf's greatest ambassadors by many teaching professionals throughout the country.
Since his passing in 2006, the Harmon’s two sons, along with immediate family members, have served as gatekeepers of The Harmon Foundation, which annually awards two $10,000 college scholarships for graduating high school seniors who are seeking to continue their careers.

Dick's youngest son, Chris Harmon, shares his dad’s love for birds, especially the cardinal. Birds represented presence, memory, and quiet connection for Dick, and that symbolism now lives on through the Harmon family, with the cardinal as the logo of their family foundation. Today, when a loved one passes, the sight of a cardinal is a gentle reminder of those who are never far, a sign of love, legacy, and enduring connection.
Grab a pole, a line and Shipleys Donuts for early morning fun! Former assistant golf professionals Gordon Johnson and Ken MacDonald would meet Dick two hours before work to fish the pond at River Oaks Country Club.
Dick Harmon built lasting relationships with the members at River Oaks Country Club that spanned more than 20 years. He took great pride in developing assistant golf professionals, mentoring them not only in teaching the swing but in understanding people and the business of the game. Harmon pushed his assistants to grow into leaders, preparing them to become head professionals or directors of instruction, giving them the opportunity to go on and build the same kind of meaningful careers and club relationships that he enjoyed at River Oaks.
With hundreds gathered to honor Dick Harmon, the service was filled with both heartfelt emotion and the unmistakable humor that defined the Harmon family. As each brother spoke, Billy shared a memorable story about Dick arriving at the gates of heaven and striking up a conversation with their father, capturing the wit and warmth they all grew up with.
Kate Golden captured her first LPGA Tour victory in memorable fashion, a win made even sweeter by what it meant beyond the trophy. One of the perks of the victory was earning a spot on the wall in the office of her longtime golf teacher, Dick Harmon, a space reserved for champions he has guided to the top. For Kate, the moment was a powerful nod to the years of work behind the scenes and the coach who helped shape her path to the winner’s circle.
Dick Harmon carried forward the gift his father, Claude Harmon, was known for, making the game both approachable and enjoyable to learn. Like his father, Dick believed golf instruction should be engaging, encouraging, and rooted in a genuine love for teaching. His ability to simplify the game, connect with players of all levels, and create a fun atmosphere ensured that learning golf was never intimidating but always rewarding.
Enjoy this story from Lucas Glover, 2009 U.S. Open Champion.
The Harmon family was as known for their humor and constant ribbing as they were for their golf instruction. At River Oaks Country Club, Dick Harmon took pride in keeping the golf shop well stocked, including cashmere socks. Claude Harmon, always ready to stir things up, would come through and quietly have them boxed up for him, leaving the shelves empty and exasperating Dick! Playful needling was part of the family DNA, pushing each other’s buttons while reinforcing a deep bond built on love, competition, and a shared passion for the game.
Dick Harmon was the glue that held the Harmon family together, the steady presence everyone leaned on in both good times and hard ones. His brother Butch has often said that Dick quite literally saved his life during a period when he was struggling, offering support, guidance, and unwavering love. That role as protector, mentor, and anchor defined who Dick was to his family as much as any title or accomplishment.
