Dave Pelz spent a lifetime changing the way golfers understand and play the short game. A former NASA scientist, Pelz brought the discipline of research, measurement and experimentation to golf, becoming one of the game’s most influential teachers and innovators.
After competing as an amateur golfer, Pelz turned his analytical mind toward understanding why golfers score the way they do. His research led him to focus on putting, wedges and the short game, areas he believed offered golfers the greatest opportunity to lower their scores. Through thousands of hours of testing, he developed innovative teaching methods, training aids and equipment designed to turn scientific findings into practical instruction.
Pelz founded the Dave Pelz Golf Schools and became a trusted instructor to golfers at every level, including many of the game’s leading professionals. His students have included major championship winners, and his methods have influenced generations of players and teachers. He also shared his knowledge through bestselling books, including Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible and Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible, as well as decades of instructional articles and appearances.
From his Teacher Putter and other inventions to his groundbreaking research on putting and wedge play, Pelz has continually challenged conventional thinking about golf instruction. His legacy is defined by curiosity, innovation and a commitment to helping golfers understand not just how to improve, but why improvement happens.
Legacy Video
Dave Pelz’s Teacher Putter grew out of his scientific approach to understanding the putting stroke. Designed as a training tool rather than simply a putter, it evolved through years of experimentation as Dave studied alignment, impact and consistency. His son Eddie Pelz shares the story behind that evolution, explaining how his father continually refined the invention to give golfers immediate feedback and help them develop a more repeatable stroke. Like so many of Dave’s innovations, the Teacher Putter reflects his belief that better performance begins with understanding what actually happens when the putter meets the ball.
Long before sun protection became a common conversation in golf, Dave Pelz made his wide-brim hat a familiar part of his look on the course. More than a signature style, the hat provided important protection from the sun during countless hours spent teaching, researching, and working outdoors in Texas
